Kentucky First District State Senator Jason Howell has filed a new agricultural economic development program bill.
Upon passage, Senator Howell’s Senate Bill 28 would create the program within the Department of Agriculture, and would establish an oversight board and development fund.
The program would develop and fund incentives such as grants or forgivable loans, which encourage growth of sustainable products and services along with the creation of more agribusiness jobs.
Senator Howell said he looked forward to working with Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell on the pilot program he described as “way overdue”.
If approved in the legislature, the board would be chaired by the Commissioner or a designee, along with four members representing livestock, row crops, specialty crops and economic development.
