The Martin Police Department is warning citizens about scammers targeting community members.

The department says grandparent scams and law enforcement scams are on the rise. Martin Investigations Lieutenant Robbie Hatler tells us more.

Grandparent scams are when a scammer poses as a grandchild in distress claiming they need money urgently.

During the law enforcement scam the scammer impersonates a police officer or government official and demands payment for unpaid fines or court fees. They often threaten arrest.

The police say to they will never contact violators or relatives to demand payment over the phone. Never send money or personal information without verifying a situation.
