
A crowd of people gathered at the Union City Council meeting on Tuesday over concerns of packaged liquor stores in Ward 3.
Councilman Patrick Smith opposed the packaged stores during the city process of rules and local regulation meetings.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Smith explained his opposition to the establishment of the liquor stores in his elected area.(AUDIO)

After some attendees spoke during the meeting, Mayor Terry Hailey informed the crowd of the process, which began with a group who petitioned the Election Commission for a referendum.
The process then continued with a public meeting with the planning commission, and three City Council meetings to approve and establish criteria.
The Mayor then gave the proposed sites that met the qualifications of the City ordinance.(AUDIO)
One of the petitioning package store locations in Ward 3, Main Street Liquor on East Main Street, has already received license and has opened for business.
