By a 5-to-1 vote on Thursday, Union City Council members approved a Memorandum of Agreement to construct a safe room shelter on the campus of Union City schools.
The agreement between the City Council, and the Union City Board of Education, allows the school system to construct and equip a safe room shelter at the high school.
The funds for the project will come from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, through the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.
The City of Union City will act as a sub-grantee to help receive the grant funds on behalf of the school board as a pass-through entity.
The completed FEMA funded safe room shelter project will also include a new gymnasium and classrooms for the school system.
Following the reading of the agreement by Mayor Terry Hailey, a motion to accept the project was made by Hal Mosier with a second by Jim Douglas.
Mayor Hailey, along with Councilman Jim Rippy and Patrick Smith voted “yes”, with Councilman Randy Barnes casting the lone “no” vote for the project.
Councilman Katie Keathley was not present at the meeting.
