A handful of Union City Schools students got an up close and personal look at the inner workings of city government offices during a recent downtown field trip.

Members of the Leadership Innovation Team (LIT) toured the Union City Police and Fire Departments, as well as the Water Management, Waste Management, and City Planning/Management Departments during the day-long session.

The experience was the latest for the LIT students who have visited numerous area businesses and offices, learning not only about possible post-graduate work opportunities but also forging and developing relationships with management and work personnel at those workplaces.

“This was an excellent opportunity for our students to see Union City Government firsthand,” insisted Lisa Carson, the Career Counselor who coordinated the event. “It was an educational trip and was super informative.

“The students left the tour feeling that they have excellent opportunities to see employment at any of the locations that were highlighted – regardless of their post-secondary plans.”

The group met with multiple department heads, including Fire Chief Karl Ullrich, Police Chief Ben Yates, and Jason Moss, Director of Public Works and Wastewater.

All relayed to students the responsibilities and duties of their respective departments. Additionally, Ullrich showcased his department’s equipment and living quarters, while Yates introduced the group to the UCPD K-9 drug dogs, which were put into action with an exercise.

Students then enjoyed lunch before hearing from Moss, who explained the various branches under his direction. Other presenters included Melynda Tidwell (Assistant Public Works) and Jennifer Ramirez (Planning and Codes Department).

“Our main goal as we continue these series of field trips is to provide an opportunity to promote skills while developing relationships in the world of working through networking, business exposure, and professional development,” Carson added.
