School boards across Tennessee are now tasked with the decision to opt “in” or “out”, following the recent passage of Governor Bill Lee’s “Education Freedom Act”.

The Tennessee State Legislature narrowly passed the controversial school voucher plan, which allows the use of tax payer dollars to provide student scholarships to private schools.

School board members across the state now have a decision timeline, with knowledge that choosing to “opt out” would result in the loss of a one-time teacher bonus of $2,000.

During Monday’s Union City School Board meeting, Director of School’s Wes Kennedy explained the position of the system.(AUDIO)

Following passage in both the House and Senate, the Education Freedom Act will go into effect for the 2025-26 school year.
