The City of Union City took another step toward the establishment of package liquor stores in the city.

City Council members held the first reading of an Ordinance to allow the package stores in designated areas.

The vote on the first reading did receive one dissenting vote.

City Manager Johnny McTurner informed board members of a required 200-foot distance of a liquor business from churches, schools, funeral homes and playgrounds.

Councilman Patrick Smith then questioned the rule of liquor stores near low income housing.(AUDIO)

Smith requested to have the distance of the business site changed, which brought an explanation from City Attorney Jim Glasgow Jr.(AUDIO)

Council members then voted 5-to-1 to accept the first reading of the package liquor store Ordinance, with Smith casting the “no” vote.
