At the Weakley County Public Safety meeting Thursday, board members discussed the county’s earthquake plan.
EMA Director Ray Wiggington told the board that number of large earthquakes in the area has dwindled over the years since the large ones in 1811 and 1812.
Mr. Wiggington stated that Weakley County has a 50 to 75 percent chance of experiencing a 4.0 earthquake or larger within the next 100 years and only a ten percent chance of experiencing a 7.0 or above somewhere along the entire New Madrid Fault in the next 50 years.
Director Wiggington went on to describe the county’s earthquake plan
The Missouri Department of Public Safety reports that the New Madrid Seismic zone averages about 200 earthquakes per year.
