A McNairy County law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty on Saturday afternoon.
The Selmer Police Department released a statement saying McNairy County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Rick Finley, who was also a part-time Selmer police officer, was killed while responding to the call of a suspicious male on New Bethel Road in Selmer.
Reports said the individual, who was identified as 39 year old Daniel Holmes, had fired several shots into a door after attempting to force his way into the residence.
Officer Finley responded to the call and located Holmes in a driveway.
Reports said Holmes attacked officer Finley then shot him several times.
Lt. Ron Pilkington, with the Selmer Police Department, was able to return fire killing Holmes.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was contacted to investigate the incident.
