The Martin Police Department has received a Tennessee Violent Crimes Grant worth $130,000 which will allow the department to install license plate recognition cameras in Martin.
Chief of Police Phillip Fuqua made it clear that these cameras would not be used for traffic control purposes and cannot record speed. They are not meant to give out tickets.
The cameras will be used to scan for stolen vehicles or vehicles that may have been involved in a crime and are flagged in a database. The Police hope they system will help with crime prevention.
The grant covers the installation of seven cameras on state roads only. There is currently no specific time frame for installation of the cameras.
