Drought Conditions Lead to Grain Market Issues at Two Hickman Locations

The lingering drought has created a major issue in Hickman, with both grain markets now unable to accept harvested crops from farmers.

Due to low Mississippi River levels, both Cargill Grain and Consolidated Grain and Barge have been forced to cease operations.

Fulton County Agriculture Extension Agent Ben Rudy explained the situation facing many local farmers in Northwest Tennessee and Western Kentucky.(AUDIO)

Rudy said the market closure is adding to the issues of drought affected soybeans, and the popping of the beans from their pods.(AUDIO)

 

The latest river forecast for Hickman shows a stage of 6.2-feet on Sunday, with no anticipated increase in water levels in the near future.
