In 2023, the Westview Lady Chargers won a lower-level bracket in the Smokey Mountain Cup. This year, Head Coach Brandy Spendlove knew she needed to increase the level of competition for the betterment of her team, and requested to play the most difficult teams in the tournament.
After dropping both matches Saturday, the Lady Chargers faced the 2023 Class A State Champion, Liberty Creek, Sunday morning. Westview came out strong, taking a scoreless tie into the break. Liberty Creek scored a few minutes into the second half and added a goal with one minute left to secure the victory 2-0, and the Smokey Mountain Cup Championship.
Despite the winless tournament, Coach Spendlove is pleased with the way her team played. She said, “This weekend wasn’t about coming away with a win, it was about pushing the girls past the point of comfortability, and really battling some good teams. I don’t want a perfect record, I want a season full of adversity that we, as a team, have to overcome. Playing private schools, previous state champions, and quality teams from New York are just what we need to make us ready for post season play.”
Westview (8-5-1) return to action Thursday in a district match against South Fulton. First touch is at 6 pm at the Martin Soccer Complex.
