Two of the 2023 Class A state soccer tournament participants squared off Thursday night in Martin, and the large crowd was not disappointed watching a 1-1 tie.
The Madison Academic Lady Mustangs jumped on the board just five minutes into the match when a beautifully placed corner kick wrapped around the near post.  Despite Westview out shooting their opponent 12-4 in the first half, they headed to the break trailing 1-0.
Westview controlled the tempo and continued to attack the goal out of the break. Their patience paid off when junior Maddie Horton collected a ball in the box and evened the score at one.  Madison had a chance to take the lead with six minutes remaining, but the Lady Mustang attempt was swatted away by Freshman goalkeeper Kella Simmons.
Defensively, Westview held Madison in check, allowing only six shots on the night.
Westview’s soccer team now,  5-2-1, will head to Dyer County next Thursday, September 5th.  First touch is slated for 6:00 pm.
