An investigation by multiple agencies has ruled a recent Union City shooting as self-defense.

Union City police reports say Skylard Beard acted in self-defense, in the July 12th shooting of Brandon Morrow in the area of 503 Nash Street.

Based on statements from witnesses, interviews, video and physical evidence, investigators determined Morrow retrieved a weapon from his vehicle during an argument with Beard.

As the argument escalated, Morrow attempted to pull the gun from his waistband, with Beard able to take the weapon in an attempt to flee.

The police report said Morrow then tried to gain control of the gun, with Beard firing one round that struck Morrow.

Beard again tried to flee, but Morrow closed the distance and was shot three additional times.

The self-defense decision was announced following a meeting by Union City police with District Attorney Collin Johnson, Assistant District Attorneys Jerald Campbell and Samuel Vernon, along with Investigator Robbie Hatler of the 27th Judicial District office.

Morrow remains hospitalized at Regional One in Memphis.
