The National Transportation Safety Board has released a preliminary report concerning a deadly crop duster plane crash near Martin.

The crash on the morning of June 25th claimed the life of 61 year old longtime pilot Scott Rainey, of Obion County.

According to the report, a witness saw the aircraft flying about 15-to-20 feet above the treetops and not spraying.

The witness said the engine initially sounded normal, but when it drew closer, there was a loud noise as if something was dragging.

Moments later, the crop duster crashed into a wooded area and the witness called 911 to report the incident.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the right wingtip and a spray nozzle were separated from the aircraft and found hundreds of feet away.

The report said a broken tree trunk and tree limbs, at the edge of one intended field to be sprayed, were located about 750 feet from the main wreckage.

Additional examinations of the crash are continuing.
