Today is the federal holiday of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The day was recognized in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the National Independence Day Act into law.

It is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States.

It was on June 19th of 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

Celebrations on this day include picnics, family reunions and historical reenactments.

Juneteenth also became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.
