U.S. News and World Report has listed Union City High School as a 2023 Best High School for the ninth consecutive year in its annual rankings of high schools across America.
Union City School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said by earning a national ranking in the Top 40-percent among more than 18,000 rated high schools in the country, Union City achieved the elite “US News Best High School” designation and the opportunity to prominently display a UC News-trademarked “Best High Schools” banner.
Union City High School has earned the honor every year since 2015.
“This type of recognition on both the national and state stage is something we’ll always celebrate and be proud of at Union City High School,” Principal Jacob Cross said. “No matter how often it happens, it’ll never get old.
“As a Union City graduate and an administrator, I find this extremely satisfying. It’s a wonderful tribute to the continued commitment to academic excellence of our entire student body, our faculty, and our staff.”
Union City High School ranked 40th among 462 Tennessee High Schools on the list and had an overall ranking of 82.62. UCHS was the third smallest school among the Top 40.
Schools are ranked based on their performance on state-required tests, graduation rates, and how well they prepare students for college.
The overall score is calculated by ranking six indicators with varying weights. They include college readiness (30 percent), college curriculum breadth (10 percent), state assessment proficiency (20 percent), state assessment performance (20 percent), underserved student performance (10 percent), and graduation rate (10 percent).
The highest ranked U.S. public schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best High Schools rankings are those whose students demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math, reading and science state assessments, earned qualifying scores on an array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.
U.S. News and World Report was founded in 1933 as a news magazine that transitioned to primarily web-based publishing in 2010. It is widely considered as America’s oldest and best-known ranker of academic institutions and covers health, technology, and politics, along with education.
Since 1983 it has been primarily known for its influential and annual reports of colleges and graduate schools, spanning across most fields and subjects.
