A Dresden Police officer has been charged with possession of marijuana and tampering with evidence after failing to turn in a citation and report the evidence.
Weakley County Sheriff’s Investigator Kerry Workman said Dresden Officer Lane Vargas was taken into custody following an investigation into a missing citation and 2 grams of marijuana.
In October, Vargas conducted a traffic stop on Highway 22 where he recovered the marijuana and issued the driver a citation for speeding and possession.
Vargas never entered the marijuana into evidence at the Dresden Police Department nor gave the citation to Weakley County General Sessions Court.
Chief Bryan Chandler found the missing ticket in a filing cabinet which led to additional questions about the marijuana.
Lieutenant Workman spoke with Vargas about the incident and the whereabouts of the marijuana he recovered from the traffic stop.
Vargas stated he had gotten rid of the marijuana but does not remember how.
Vargas stated he did not turn the citation into General Sessions Court due to him messing up on the citation while in the process of filling it out.
Lieutenant Workman observed the citation to be filled out correctly with a court date as well as the defendant’s signature.
The defendant’s address was the only section of the citation not completed.
Based on these finding Lane Vargas is being charged with Tampering with Evidence and Simple Poss. of Sch. VI Marijuana.
