Union City’s girls’ and boys’ track teams recorded second-place finishes in the Creek Wood Invitational on Saturday.

School Communications Director Mike Hutchens said Debrionna Jones highlighted the Lady Tornadoes’ solid showing in damp conditions by winning the shot put and discus competitions. Nakyah Yarbrough was runner-up in the 100-meter dash, and Katana Bonds placed second in the long jump.

Ca’Lae Ervin and Allysia Davis tied for second place in the high jump for the UC girls.

Kameron Shade won the 100-meter dash for the Tornado boys. Keaton Brown was second in both the shot put and discus throws.

Head coach Wade Maddox, who has built both programs into Top 10 state entries and has high hopes for this year’s teams, was pleased with the outing.

“Being able to see bigger schools and competing against strong competition is only going to help our kids in the long run,” Maddox said. “Our kids had to really work to win some events and place high in others. In the early going, it appears that our distance people are well ahead of where we were at this time last year. Hopefully, we can continue to build on that down the road.”

Union City will host the first of five home meets this spring on Thursday, with more than 15 schools signed up to compete.
