Martin Fire Chief Jamie Summers says the Christmas season is a great time to decorate your Christmas tree but there are some things you need to know.

Chief Summers says to turn off your Christmas lights when you leave your home.  Don’t leave the tree lights on when you go to bed.

He also said while candles smell good and bring in the festive season make sure there is nothing around the candle that might catch fire and extinguish them out when you’re not at home.

If you have a “live” tree keep, a check on it for dryness and water it often.

Chief Summers said another problem that can cause a fire is putting too many plugs in one outlet.

And he reminds those who plan to cook he say almost half the fires in the home begin in the kitchen.

Chief Summers said if you have any kind of fire call 911.
