Martin WW2 veteran turns 100

Mr. Robert Chappell and his wife, Betty, have been married for 77 years. The two are pictured during a 100th birthday celebration Saturday at their Martin home.

A Martin World War II veteran is celebrating his 100th birthday Wednesday.

Mr. Robert Chappell was born on October 4, 1923 and spent three years fighting overseas in the second World War.

On Saturday, the Weakley County community helped Mr. Chappell celebrate his birthday with members of the Martin Police and Fire Departments, the ROTC, and Rolling Thunder Tennessee Six visiting Mr. Chappell.

Mr. Chappell also remembers when electricity came to Weakley County.

During a celebration Saturday, Mr. Chappell was presented a key to the city by Martin Mayor Randy Brundige, and it was announced that Mr. Chappell will be the Grand Marshal of next month’s Veterans Day Parade in Martin.
